HomeRead the 2006 Surgeon General's Report on Secondhand Smoke
In North Carolina, a preemptive 1993 law prevents local communities from setting their own smokefree ordinances and rules. Dubbed the "NC Dirty Air Law," it leaves communities unable to pass policy that makes all restaurants, worksites, and other public places 100% smokefree to protect their citizens from the dangers of secondhand smoke. In fact, it virtually requires that public places maintain space for smokers, unless they either pass private policy, or are specifically exempted by the NC legislature. Smokefree Guilford encourages you to sign a resolution in favor of smokefree worksites and other public places can help to restore local control over this important health protection, or to promote smokefree policy at the state level.
