According to an October 2006 Elon University poll, North Carolinians overwhelmingly prefer smokefree environments. Some of the polls findings are as follows:
- 65% of respondents said they would support or strongly support a statewide law in North Carolina that would not allow smoking in public places.
- 86% of North Carolinians said that they would agree or strongly agree that employees in North Carolina should be able to work in a smokefree environment.
- 84% of citizens said that people eating in a restaurant should be free from secondhand smoke.
